MIHCA Leadership and Governance

Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors comprises elected community members who guide our strategic direction and oversee operations.

Board members are elected for a term of up to three years, with the possibility of renewal for two additional terms, and can serve for three consecutive terms at most.

 Abigail Hain — Chair

Abbie is an RN in the province of British Columbia. With over thirty years of practice experience, she holds an MScN from the University of Ottawa. She is finishing a PhD in Nursing focusing on health system quality and patient safety at Queens University. Her clinical background includes practice in Northern British Columbia, the Canadian Armed Forces as a nursing officer, and a tertiary critical care/trauma/neurosurgery setting in Ottawa. 

As a critical care nurse educator and in leadership positions at the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, Abbie has contributed to curriculum development, education and clinical program innovations, quality improvement, simulation integration and professional development initiatives for interprofessional teams. She has led and contributed to developing and implementing several provincial healthcare system improvement projects, programs and national strategies in Canada.

Abbie recently moved back to British Columbia with her husband and is now a full-time resident of Mayne Island. She finds each day on this beautiful island to be an incredible gift and is very much looking forward to being part of the community and serving where she can. 

Abbie was re-elected to the MIHCA board in 2023.

Lindsay Allan — Vice Chair

Lindsay graduated in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Napier College, Edinburgh, Scotland. She spent the majority of her career in senior management and executive roles in the medical laboratory field in both the public and private health care sectors in BC. Prior to moving to Mayne in early 2011, Lindsay was President of Excelleris Technologies Inc. for 10 years. (Excelleris provides electronic transmission of medical lab results to physicians and patients through My Ehealth.)

Lindsay joined MIHCA's board in 2012 and was elected Chair in 2013. 

After serving six years, Lindsay took a year off, re-joined the board in 2019, and was elected Chair in 2020.

Joy McFarlane - Treasurer

The McFarlane family has been based on Mayne for over 40 years and Joy moved here permanently in the summer of 2023.  Prior to moving back to Canada, Joy primarily resided in the Cayman Islands while completing overseas secondments to the Channel Islands and Australia in conjunction with job-related travel across India, Europe, USA and the Caribbean.

She began her career at UBC attaining a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology while working in a research lab on campus. Later she became a Chartered Accountant (CPA, CA) employed by a public accounting firm in downtown Vancouver (for seven years) before embarking on a career in international business and finance. As a firm believer in continuous learning, Joy went on to earn further qualifications as a qualified estate practitioner (TEP), a Chartered Director (C.Dir.) and obtained a certificate in the Fundamentals of Alternative Investments (through CAIA Association).

Joy's on-the-job experience during the past twenty-three years abroad has been extensive and encompasses executive roles across many sectors including but not limited to: banking, accounting, corporate governance, hedge funds, fiduciary, estate planning, real estate acquisition and development, property management, social impact investing and biotechnology.

Since becoming a full-timer on Mayne, Joy has been enjoying the peace and beauty of island life with her three rescue dogs and members of her family who live nearby.

Joy was elected to the MIHCA Board in June 2024.

 

Bernard Getzlaf - Secretary

Bernard worked as both a registered nurse and registered psychiatric nurse from 1975 to 1980 in hospitals in Vancouver, B.C. and Penticton, B.C. After obtaining his Ph.D. in psychology at Washington State University, he returned to Canada to complete his internship and residency at the Manitoba Medical School. He later worked at Hopitalier Tache in Saint Boniface, Manitoba. In 1987 moved to Oregon and worked in geriatric psychiatry for 2 years. As well as direct clinical work, he completed 3 training manuals and conducted training throughout rural Oregon, in working with mental health problems in older adults. In 1989 he moved to Portland, Oregon where he had a full time private practice and was the consulting neuropsychologist in the Legacy Hospital System.

 Bernard’s board and leadership experience includes the head of the Department of Psychology at Hopitalier Tache, where he lead a team of psychiatric nurses and psychology trainees. At the same time he was the secretary of the board of Sara Riel psychiatric rehabilitation facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba. From 1995 to 2000 he helped form the Pacific Northwest Providers, an independent practitioners association of over 100, and became the first Chair of the Board. From 2014 to 2016 he was the executive director of a small private clinic called the Pacific Bipolar Treatment Program.

 BernardmovedtoMayneIslandin2022andnowlivesherefulltime.Hisdaughter,also in thehealth field, lives in Vancouver, B.C. His son has plans to move closer over the next year or so.

Bernard was elected to the MIHCA Board in June 2024.

Robert McFarlane

Rob has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University. He also holds a Chartered Insurance Professional designation from the Insurance Institute of Canada and a Canadian Risk Management Certificate from the Global Risk Management Association.

In addition to 36 years in business, his experience includes non-profit board membership in organizations from very small to large. These have included business associations, non-profit senior housing associations, service clubs, and the Langley Board of Education.

His Mayne Island roots go back to assisting his family to build a Bennett Bay home in 1975. After decades of weekend and holiday trips, he now lives full-time with his wife in their home on Mayne.

Brian Crumblehulme

A 45 year resident of Sk'Tak (Mayne Island), Brian earned a PhD Candidacy from UBC; a Master of Arts at SFU; plus Certificates & diplomas in Fitness & Health; Business Management; Chemistry, Medical Technology, and certificates in theatre, dance, writing and project management.

In local politics, he was elected for two terms as Islands Trustee, also Chair of Islands Trust Area Services, plus five years as CRD liaison. He organised and chaired an Islands Trust/CRD joint meeting; and another with San Juan County Council.

He previously spent two years as Executive Director for a non-profit charity in Alberta, where he negotiated and supervised the construction of a Community Services Centre. He spent 18 months as Senior Advisor to an NGO in Kazakhstan & Director of a World Bank sponsored Conference. He also directed the first ever post-Soviet Festival of Traditional Kazakh Art.

For 17 years on Mayne he was chef and co-owner with his wife Mary, of Fernhill Lodge, a 4 star country guest lodge. In North Vancouver he was a supervisor in Electro-chemicals R&D, where obtained a patent. Before that he was Plant Chemist in Nanaimo, and Lab Technologist in the UK making vaccines for Evan's Medical (Glaxo-Kline). 

He taught diverse subjects at the college and university level and is the author of  many published essays & 2 books. In Nepal he was the architect for a large community school at a rural development program in the far western Himalaya. At various times on Mayne: he founded six non-profit community organisations; was elected Director MI Improvement District; President, MI Community Centre; Parks & Rec Commissionaire; President & Director for MILT, Founder, Christmas Eve Fire & Carolling; member of the Health Advisory Committee, Director of MI Emergency Support Services; and a Volunteer Firefighter. He was the instigator of the Syrian refugee celebration pic-nic; and appointed planner and host for a 9 hour visit by the Lt. Governor featuring 150 participants.

Brian was elected to the Board in July 2023

David Gordon-Brown

 I’m a retired family doctor who has worked in the UK and New Zealand over 30 years.

My original degree was in Economics- graduating in 1974.After a period of work and travel I changed career track and graduated in medicine from University College Hospital in London in 1984.

After 5 years of hospital medicine I settled into General Practice in a semi-rural location in Suffolk where I remained for 25 years.

My connection with Canada is through my mother who was born in Saskatoon and moved to England in 1950.

I’m married with 3 grown up children one of whom has lived in Vancouver for 11 years. My wife Gail and I came to Mayne in 2021 where we now live for  6 months every year 

David is a retired family doctor who worked in the UK and New Zealand over 30 years.

David was elected to the MIHCA board in July 2023.

Colleen Proctor

My working life started in 1974 with the Province of B.C., Ministry of Attorney General. I held the following positions, amongst others, in the Provincial Court of British Columbia:

Justice of the Peace/Supervisor of Family and Youth Court at Burnaby Provincial Court 

Judicial Case Manager/Trial Coordinator - scheduling and managing criminal trials, liaising with crown counsel, criminal defense attorneys and judges in Burnaby, Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and New Westminster 

Judicial Justice of the Peace - presiding over hearings for provincial statutes, small claims payment hearings, criminal bail hearings and search warrant applications  

Member of Judicial Council for the Provincial Court of British Columbia - along with the Chief Judge of British Columbia and other members of Judicial Council, was responsible for reviewing applicants and interviewing those seeking appointment at Provincial Court Judges and Justices of the Peace.   

I retired in 2011 and moved to Mayne Island. I have enjoyed living on this beautiful island and becoming part of our community. I have volunteered with MIALS, MIHCA, Mayne Island Quilt Guild, the Thrift Store and the Fall Fair Committee of the Agricultural Society.

Colleen was elected to the MIHCA Board in June 2024.
