We respectfully acknowledge that we live and work on S,ḴŦAK, known now as “Mayne Island” which is an ancestral, traditional, and unceded gathering place of many Coast Salish peoples, W̱SÁNEĆ, Hul’qumi’num, Stz’uminus, Quw’ustun, and sc̓əwaθenaɁɬtəməxw Nations. We are honoured to be in a place with such a meaningful history. We acknowledge the oppression and disparity in health care of
indigenous people with commitment to learning and working towards reconciliation.

New Residents and Visitors

Please be well-prepared and bring all your medications and supplies, especially if you use an Epi-Pen Kit or have Diabetes. Please have a fully-stocked first aid kit with you as well. We live in a rural isolated community, so please make sure you have all your medications. The clinic is over capacity and not able to offer any walk-in services. The Clinic is not able to accept any new patients but Wait list is available with HealthLinkBC. Please call your own Physician to arrange for a prescription you can pick up from a pharmacy in Sidney or ask the Mayne Island Courier to pick it up for you @ 250 539 – 9921. Your Pharmacist can provide 30 days emergency supply with no new prescription and treat minor problems.

Expectant Mothers/families and visitors on Mayne

There are no obstetric or midwife services on Mayne Island. Air BC Ambulance transportation to the nearest maternity hospital can be lengthy, risky and dependent on weather and availability of craft. For the health and safety of pregnant women on Mayne and their babies,  expectant mothers should leave the island at least 2 weeks before their due date or earlier if advised by their health care provider.  We also encourage new mothers with newborns to remain off the island for the first week if possible, to reduce any risk.

Mental Health/Substance Abuse – Counselling Services

Salt Spring Island Community Services provides counselling and resource and referral services to Mayne. The Mayne Island Mental Health Clinician can be reached at 1-250-588-6813. For more information on Counselling Services available through Salt Spring Island,   here is a comprehensive list of services.

If you are referred to off-island specialty medical services

Through the Travel Assistance Program (TAP), the BC Government covers travel costs for island residents who need to travel off island for MSP-covered specialty health services not available on Mayne.

If your physician or nurse practitioner refers you for off-island specialty medical services or consultation with a medical specialist, you are eligible to request a TAP form.

Follow the directions on the back of the TAP form to ensure your travel is authorized.

The cost of round trip ferry fares for one passenger and vehicle (and driver, if required) are covered through this program. Because residents travelling with a TAP form are going to appointments on a non-emergency basis,  BC Ferries does not provide priority boarding.

For more information about the TAP go to this link for more information.

Respect, Patience and Kindness
Thank you for your respect, patience and kindness towards everyone working at the Health Centre. Please remember that we do our best to support health care in our remote community but that we have increasingly limited health care resources at our disposal — and increasing demand for care.
So please take those limitations to heart when they frustrate you.
And remember that we do not tolerate abusive behaviour, foul language, threats or violence of any kind.
