Board of Directors 2022/2023

Volunteer Board members are elected for up to a three-year term, renewable for another three years, to a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Lindsay Allan — Chair

Lindsay is a graduate in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Napier College, Edinburgh Scotland. She spent the majority of her career in senior management and executive roles in the medical laboratory field in both the public and private health care sectors in BC. Prior to moving to Mayne in early 2011, Lindsay was President of Excelleris Technologies Inc. for 10 years. (Excelleris provides electronic transmission of medical lab results to physicians and through My Ehealth, to patients.)

Lindsay joined MIHCA’s board in 2012, and was elected chair in 2013. After serving for six years, Lindsay took a year off and re-joined the board in 2019. In 2020, Lindsay was elected chair.

Abigail Hain — Vice Chair

Abbie is an RN in the province of British Columbia. With over thirty years of practice experience she holds an MScN from the University of Ottawa and is currently finishing a PhD in Nursing with a focus on health system quality and patient safety at Queens University. Her clinical background includes practice in Northern British Columbia, the Canadian Armed Forces as a nursing officer and in a tertiary critical care/trauma/neurosurgery setting in Ottawa. As a critical care nurse educator and in leadership positions at the Canadian Patient Safety Institute Abbie has contributed to curriculum development, education and clinical program innovations, quality improvement, simulation integration and professional development initiatives for interprofessional teams. She has led and contributed to the development and implementation of several provincial healthcare system improvement projects, programs and national strategies in Canada.

Abbie has recently moved back to British Columbia with her husband and is now a full-time resident on Mayne Island. She finds each day on this beautiful island to be an incredible gift, and is very much looking forward to being part of the community and serving where she can.   Abbie was elected to the MIHCA board in 2020.

Malcolm Inglis

Malcolm is a full-time resident of Mayne Island, since retiring from a career in Information Technology in 2010.  At the time of retirement, Malcolm was a technology manager with the City of Vancouver’s Engineering Department.  Having worked in the private sector, and with federal, provincial and municipal governments, Malcolm has experience with staff management, business analysis, project management, budgeting and facilitation.  Malcolm has been a director of the Mayne Island Conservancy Society for six years and is currently its president. 

Malcolm was elected to the MIHCA board in 2017 and served as chair in 2019/2020. He was re-elected to the board for a second term in 2020.

Diana King 

After many years as a part-timer on Mayne, Diana has been a full-time resident since 2011.

She spent the majority of her career at LifeLabs in lab operations  management and latterly —  as a member of LifeLabs BC’s senior management team for many years — was responsible for  communications and public affairs for the BC arm of the company. After retirement, Diana returned to LifeLabs on a contract basis as acting director of Client Services from 2009 to 2011.

Diana has been a member of the Southern Gulf Islands Ferry Advisory Committee since 2015, was elected to the MIHCA board in 2017 and served as chair in 2018 and vice-chair in 2019. In 2020, she was re-elected to the board for a second term.

Robert McFarlane

Rob has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University.  He also holds a Chartered Insurance Professional designation from the Insurance Institute of Canada and a Canadian Risk Management Certificate from the Global Risk Management Association.

In addition to 36 years in business his experience includes non-profit board membership in organizations from very small to large.  These have included business associations, non-profit seniors housing associations, service clubs, and the Langley Board of Education.

His Mayne Island roots go back to assisting his family to build a Bennett Bay home in 1975.  After decades of weekend and holiday trips, he now lives full-time with his wife in their home on Mayne.

Fran Wertman                                        

Fran has been a full-time resident of Mayne Island since August 2017.  She is a retired nurse-midwife/nurse practitioner.   Her background is a Master of Nursing from Dalhousie University, Halifax (1989), Certificate in nurse-midwifery, Memorial University, St. John’s (1986) and Post-Master’s Certificate in nurse-midwifery, Stonybrook University, NY (2003).

She has been providing care of women and families across the lifespan since 1980.  Most recently she was the Clinical Director of a large midwifery practice in Tucson, AZ providing pregnancy and primary care to women.  The practice attended approximately 550 births a year in a free-standing birth center and tertiary level hospital.  She has experience developing a population based perinatal database in PEI in the early 1990’s and is currently active on the research committee of the American Association of Birth Centers and their perinatal database.

Fran was re-elected to the MIHCA board in 2021.
