Board of Directors 2023/2024

Volunteer Board members are elected for up to a three-year term, renewable for another three years, to a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Lindsay Allan — Chair

Lindsay is a graduate in Medical Laboratory Sciences from Napier College, Edinburgh Scotland. She spent the majority of her career in senior management and executive roles in the medical laboratory field in both the public and private health care sectors in BC. Prior to moving to Mayne in early 2011, Lindsay was President of Excelleris Technologies Inc. for 10 years. (Excelleris provides electronic transmission of medical lab results to physicians and through My Ehealth, to patients.)

Lindsay joined MIHCA’s board in 2012, and was elected chair in 2013. After serving for six years, Lindsay took a year off and re-joined the board in 2019. In 2020, Lindsay was elected chair.

Abigail Hain — Vice Chair

Abbie is an RN in the province of British Columbia. With over thirty years of practice experience she holds an MScN from the University of Ottawa and is currently finishing a PhD in Nursing with a focus on health system quality and patient safety at Queens University. Her clinical background includes practice in Northern British Columbia, the Canadian Armed Forces as a nursing officer and in a tertiary critical care/trauma/neurosurgery setting in Ottawa. As a critical care nurse educator and in leadership positions at the Canadian Patient Safety Institute Abbie has contributed to curriculum development, education and clinical program innovations, quality improvement, simulation integration and professional development initiatives for interprofessional teams. She has led and contributed to the development and implementation of several provincial healthcare system improvement projects, programs and national strategies in Canada.

Abbie has recently moved back to British Columbia with her husband and is now a full-time resident on Mayne Island. She finds each day on this beautiful island to be an incredible gift, and is very much looking forward to being part of the community and serving where she can.   Abbie was elected to the MIHCA board for a second term in 2023.

Robert McFarlane – Treasurer

Rob has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University.  He also holds a Chartered Insurance Professional designation from the Insurance Institute of Canada and a Canadian Risk Management Certificate from the Global Risk Management Association.

In addition to 36 years in business his experience includes non-profit board membership in organizations from very small to large.  These have included business associations, non-profit seniors housing associations, service clubs, and the Langley Board of Education.

His Mayne Island roots go back to assisting his family to build a Bennett Bay home in 1975.  After decades of weekend and holiday trips, he now lives full-time with his wife in their home on Mayne.

Brian Crumblehume – Secretary

A 45 year resident of Sk’Tak, Brian earned a PhD Candidacy from UBC; an MA at SFU; plus Certificates & diplomas in Fitness & Health; Medical Technology, theatre, dance and others. He was elected for two terms as Islands Trustee, Chair of Islands Trust Area Services, plus five years as CRD liaison when he organised and chaired diverse committees.

He spent two years as Executive Director for a non-profit charity in Alberta, where he negotiated the construction of a Community Services Centre; and 18 months as Senior Advisor to an NGO in Kazakhstan, & Director of a World Bank sponsored Conference, and directed the first post-Soviet Festival of Traditional Kazakh Art. In Nepal he was the architect for a rural school in the far western Himalaya.

For 17 years on Mayne he was chef and co-owner of Fernhill Lodge, a 4 star country guest lodge. He was a supervisor for Electro-chemicals R&D, where obtained a patent. Before that he was Plant Chemist in Nanaimo, and Lab Technologist in the UK making vaccines for Glaxo-Kline.

He taught and lectured diverse subjects and is the author of many published essays & 2 books. On Mayne: he founded six non-profit community organisations; became the director/chair of many, founder of the Christmas Eve Fire & Carolling; member of the Health Advisory Committee, Director of MI Emergency Support Services; and Volunteer Firefighter. He was the instigator of the Syrian refugee celebration pic-nic; and appointed host for a 9 hour visit by the Lt. Governor. Brian was elected to the MIHCA Board in 2023.

David Gordon-Brown

David is a retired family doctor who worked in the UK and New Zealand over 30 years.

His original degree was in Economics- graduating in 1974. After a period of work and travel he changed career track and graduated in medicine from University College Hospital in London in 1984.

After 5 years of hospital medicine David settled into General Practice in a semi-rural location in Suffolk where he remained for 25 years.

His connection with Canada is through his mother who was born in Saskatoon and moved to England in 1950.

David is married with 3 grown up children, one of whom has lived in Vancouver for 11 years. David and his wife Gail came to Mayne in 2021 where they now live for 6 months every year. David was elected to the MIHCA board in 2023.

Colleen Proctor

Colleen’s working life started in 1974 with the Province of B.C., Ministry of Attorney General where she  held the following positions, amongst others, in the Provincial Court of British Columbia:

–  Justice of the Peace/Supervisor of Family and Youth Court at Burnaby Provincial Court

–  Judicial Case Manager/Trial Coordinator – scheduling and managing criminal trials, liaising with crown counsel, criminal defense attorneys and judges in Burnaby, Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and New Westminster

–  Judicial Justice of the Peace – presiding over hearings for provincial statutes, small claims payment hearings, criminal bail hearings and search warrant applications 

–  Member of Judicial Council for the Provincial Court of British Columbia – along with the Chief Judge of British Columbia and other members of Judicial Council, was responsible for reviewing applicants and interviewing those seeking appointment at Provincial Court Judges and Justices of the Peace.  

Colleen retired in 2011 and moved to Mayne Island. She has enjoyed living on this beautiful island and becoming part of our community. She has volunteered with MIALS, MIHCA, Mayne Island Quilt Guild, the Thrift Store and the Fall Fair Committee of the Agricultural Society. 

Fran Wertman                                        

Fran has been a full-time resident of Mayne Island since August 2017.  She is a retired nurse-midwife/nurse practitioner.   Her background is a Master of Nursing from Dalhousie University, Halifax (1989), Certificate in nurse-midwifery, Memorial University, St. John’s (1986) and Post-Master’s Certificate in nurse-midwifery, Stonybrook University, NY (2003).

She has been providing care of women and families across the lifespan since 1980.  Most recently she was the Clinical Director of a large midwifery practice in Tucson, AZ providing pregnancy and primary care to women.  The practice attended approximately 550 births a year in a free-standing birth center and tertiary level hospital.  She has experience developing a population based perinatal database in PEI in the early 1990’s and is currently active on the research committee of the American Association of Birth Centers and their perinatal database.

Fran was re-elected to the MIHCA board in 2021.
